Course Reflection

In this class, i feel I learned more intellectually about design and critical thinking about creativity. I learned more about the thought process behind ideas and design and Kevin was helpful in teaching that to me. I enjoyed learning about the creative process and the tasks with drawing ideas.

Creativity Myths & Creativity Blocks

Some myths that surround the idea of creativity are:

  • Creativity can’t be taught, that you are born with a creative gift.
  • That you have to be more right-brained to be creative and those left-brained can’t be creative

What blocks my creativity?

  • Money
  • Time
  • Unsure about what to do, ideas
  • If what I want to do is possible
  • If I have the resources
  • Anxiety if it’ll be good enough
  • Procrastination

Left Brained & Right Brained : Myth

There’s a myth that people who are supposedly left-brained are more analytical and those who are right-brained are more creative except that is a complete myth. People that use this theory either do not realise that the science behind the myth is outdated and has been found false or they use it to promote their tests and books which scam people into buying it because most of the tests to see if you’re right or left brained cost money and the people that run these sites are scamming people out of their money. Everyone uses both sides of their brain, we need to use both sides of our brain because we can’t just rely on one side, while the right side is about our creativity, intuition and emotional side, our left side is about our logical thinking, mathematics and numbers which is needed for our everyday life. While some people might use one side more than the other, they might be more analytical than emotional or understand art more than they do mathematics, it doesn’t not mean we don’t use one side of our brain and we need both sides to interpret and understand the world.

Where do good ideas come from?

Ideas come from a number of different places, you could have a thought late at night, or see a picture, a photograph, a film or just see something happening down the street. Ideas strike at random times, you will rarely come up with a good idea on the spot or when you’re trying to think of a good idea. Good ideas come when you’re not thinking about it at all. Ideas can come to you subconsciously from deep in the mind and you don’t even know you’re thinking of an idea. Good ideas can also come from somewhere else, where you take an idea already done and change it to make something original, something of your own.
